Christmas Gala Invitation
On Saturday 12th December Heath Town Swimming Club proved that they were back in strength.
Established at Heath Town Swimming Baths in 1933 the club was almost lost into oblivion after the closure of the old baths.
A small nucleus of enthusiasts tried to keep the Club alive at Bushbury Baths with sadly only nine members. When Bushbury Baths were themselves earmarked for closure it seemed like the end of the road.
Three years ago the Club relocated at Wolverhampton Swimming and Fitness Centre, Bentley Bridge, Wednesfield and this is where the story gradually began to change!
Heath Town Swimming Club now has 272 members.
Predominantly a teaching club because of its originally small membership the club remained quite low profile in its infancy, however on Saturday this all changed.
The Club held its first Club Gala involving over 100 of its members.
The idea of the Gala was to include every member that wanted to take part, regardless of age or experience.
Races were tailored to suit all abilities whilst encouraging members that were new to competition and understandably a little nervous to take part, just for the fun of it.
The evening was a complete success involving a wide cross section of the local community, parents and children alike involved in the same activity on the same evening.
Fitness and fun combined with a very healthy competitive spirit – parents cheering for children, siblings for siblings, friends for friends and all gaining points for one of the four teams that they were appointed to.
Medals were awarded for the first three places but every swimmer, regardless of age was awarded finishing points to add to a team score so that everybody’s contribution was vitally important.
This year glory went to the Dolphins Team but who knows what may happen next year!
